WATCHER lets you monitor the status of AppleTalk zones as well as devices. WATCHER can monitor specific zones, as well as discover new zones.
The treatment of zones in the zones list is similar to the treatment of devices in the WATCHER main test list.
To turn zone monitoring on, select Enable Zone Check under the Zones menu. When zone monitoring is on, a check mark appears in the menu beside Enable Zone Check. To turn it off, select it again.
WATCHER lets you monitor the status of AppleTalk zones. You can add zones to your zones list, delete zones, attach notifications to zones, and flag zones as Not Tested, On Hold, or New.
Figure 10-1 Zones List
The WATCHER zones list can display all of the available zones. Each entry shows a zone name and the zone's status. The status category is the column on the right. There are four possible states:
DN = Down
OH = On Hold
UP = Up
NT = Not Tested
The shaded status indicator shows the zone's current state. Any entry for a zone that is down will be red on a color screen, or italicized on a black and white screen.
The New indicator is shaded on newly detected zones. You can clear this indicator by selecting Reset Selection from the Zones menu and dragging through to Clear New.
The zones list provides several buttons that let you perform basic tasks in the list. These buttons are:
Click Add to open the Add Zones dialog box, letting you add zones to the main test list.
Click Remove to delete the selected zones from the list.
Click Attach to add notifications to the selected zones. You can also double-click on a selected zone to bring up the Attach Notifications dialog box.
Click Get Info to open a dialog box containing a variety of information about the selected zone. |
Use the Add Zones dialog box to add a new zone to the WATCHER zones list. Under the Zones menu, select Add zones. The Add Zones dialog box, shown in Figure 10-2, appears.
Figure 10-2 Add Zones dialog box
The Add Zones dialog box provides a number of buttons and functions:
Select the zones you want to monitor and click Add. (The selected zones appear on the WATCHER zones list when you finish in this dialog box.)
Type a new zone name in the New Zone field and click New to add a zone not shown in the All Zones list.
Click Remove to delete zones selected in the temporary list. Zones deleted from this list will not be added to the WATCHER zones list.
Click Notify to attach notifications to the zones selected in the temporary list.
Click Cancel to close the dialog box without making any changes to the list in the WATCHER zones list.
Click OK to add the zones in the temporary list to the WATCHER zones list. This closes the dialog box.
To display the Attach Notification dialog box, click Attach in the zones list. Figure 10-3 displays a sample of this dialog box.
Figure 10-3 Attach Notification dialog box
The dialog box for attaching notifications to zones contains the following items:
The name of the selected zone appears at the top of the dialog box. If you've selected more than one zone, the total number will be indicated here.
The upper list contains all the available notifications.
The lower list contains the notifications attached to the zones. It indicates the events that will generate the notification (under On) and the delay after which it will be transmitted (under After). Both settings can be changed here.
The attaching list can be sorted by the type of notification, the event and the time delay, by clicking on the corresponding radio button.
Click Add to copy the notifications selected in the notification list to the Notification Followup dialog box (discussed below).
Click Remove to delete the notifications selected in the attaching list from that zone. The notification will still appear in the notification list.
Select this option to override the paging calendar for the specific zones selected here. Any pager notifications will be sent regardless of calendar restrictions.
This button lets you attach the default zone followup to the zones. The default zone followup must first be created by selecting Zones Followup... from the Zones menu.
Click OK to complete the procedure of attaching or removing a notification. Click Cancel to abort it.
To attach a notification to a zone:
1. Select the zones in the zones list to which you would like to attach notifications. Click Attach or select Attach Notification... from the Zones menu.
You can also double-click on a zone. An Attach Notification dialog box, such as the one shown in Figure 10-3 appears.
2. If you want to apply the default zone notification to the selected zone, click Default Followup. (If this button is grayed out, you must define a default followup. This is described later in this chapter.)
3. To attach additional notifications, select a notification or a group of notifications from the notification list.
4. Click Add.
The selected notifications are added to the Notify list. The notifications also remain in the notification list. You can apply the same notification more than once to a zone.
By default, notifications are set to be generated five minutes after "Down and Up" events. In other words, WATCHER sends the notification five minutes after it detects that the zone has changed states.
5. To change the type of event that will initiate a notification from the default of "Down and Up", hold down the mouse button on the state (under On) and drag to your selection. The options are Down and Up, Down Only and Up Only.
6. To change the time delay after which the event is sent, from the default of "5 Minutes", hold down the mouse button on the time (under After) and drag to your selection.
You can use the same notification as many times as you like. For example, you may want WATCHER to deliver the on-screen message after 15 minutes and again at 20 minute intervals.
7. Repeat steps 3 through 5 to attach a series of notifications, which will provide an escalation or followup procedure for state changes on the selected zones.
8. If you are attaching a pager notification and want to send it even when the paging calendar indicates it's an off-duty time, select Bypass calendar when paging. Note that this effects only the pager notifications for the devices being configured in this dialog box.
9. Click OK to attach the notifications.
If you want to view the zones with a particular notification attached or to view the notifications attached to a particular zone, use the Search function described later in this chapter.
To remove a notification from a zone:
1. Select the zones from which you would like to remove notifications and click Attach, or select Attach Notification... from the Zones menu.
You can also simply double-click on a zone.
An Attach Notification dialog box, such as shown in Figure 10-3, will appear.
2. Select the notification from the followup list.
3. Click Remove to detach the notification from the selected zones.
4. Click OK.
You can define a default notification followup that you can easily apply to any zones. To do this, perform the following steps:
1. Select Zones Followup... from the Zones menu.
A Zones Followup dialog box, shown in Figure 10-3, appears.
2. Select a notification or group of notifications from the notification list.
3. Click Add to place the notifications in the Notify list.
4. Click in the On and After fields to set the notification event and delay for each notification.
5. Click OK.

The Search For dialog box lets you search for zones according to whether or not selected notifications or key devices are attached to them.
To display the dialog box, select Search For... from the File menu.
To search for notifications, click Notifications. The resulting dialog box will be similar to the one in Figure 7-5.
Zones are tested in accordance with the options you set using the Zone Check Options dialog box (described below). Zone testing takes place during device testing. This testing is controlled through the main test list. See the chapter Testing Devices for more information on starting and stopping tests.
You can manually set a zone to an "On Hold" (OH) or a "Not Tested" (NT) state. You can also clear the "New" flag that appears against a zone in the zones list when WATCHER first detects it.
WATCHER tests all zones except those in the On Hold state and then loops through the list again. You may want to put a zone on hold if you are about to take it out of service.
You may want to reset a zone to Not Tested in order to reset its testing data, found in the Get Info dialog box.
To set a zone state, select the device in the zones list. Select Reset Selection... from the Zones menu and drag through to Not Tested, On Hold, or Clear New.
You can specify how you want WATCHER to test zones using the Zone Check Options dialog box. Select Settings from the File menu and drag through to Options.... A dialog box appears. Select Zone Check Options from the pop-up menu at the top of the dialog box. A new dialog box like the one shown in Figure 10-5 appears.
